Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups grated cheese (preferably sharp Cheddar)
  • 1/4 cup caraway seed (optional)
  • 6 1/4 to 6 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • melted butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, sprinkle dry yeast on warm water and let it sit until frothy.
  2. Stir in sugar and salt until dissolved.
  3. Add 2 cups of flour; beat well with a spoon.
  4. Add beaten eggs, grated cheese, and caraway seeds if using; beat well.
  5. Gradually add 3 to 4 more cups of flour to make a soft dough.
  6. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface, cover with a bowl, and let rest for 10 minutes.
  7. Knead into a smooth, elastic dough, adding remaining flour as needed, about 8 to 10 minutes.
