  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 can tomato soup
  • 1 can chopped tomatoes
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. black pepper
  • 3 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 2 to 3 cups water
  • 1 to 2 red peppers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground or chopped venison in a large pot.
  2. Add chopped onion, green pepper, and optional red peppers; cook until vegetables are softened.
  3. Stir in tomato soup, chopped tomatoes, kidney beans, vinegar, cumin, dry mustard, salt, black pepper, and chili powder.
  4. Pour in enough water to cover all ingredients.
  5. Simmer the chili uncovered for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  6. Reheat before serving. Note: The vinegar helps remove the wild smell from the venison.
  7. Can be frozen in Ziploc bags for later use.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of smoked paprika or a dash of hot sauce. If you don't have kidney beans, black beans or pinto beans work well as substitutes. To save time, you can use canned chopped tomatoes with herbs instead of plain. Don't forget to adjust the spices according to your heat preference, especially if you're a fan of spicy dishes.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the venison chili with a dollop of sour cream or shredded cheese on top for added creaminess. It pairs beautifully with Daddy'S Sweet French Fries or cornbread for a hearty meal. For a fresh touch, consider a side of Orange Salad(Sugar-Free) to balance the flavors. Garnish with fresh cilantro or green onions for extra color and flavor.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover venison chili can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For longer storage, freeze the chili in Ziploc bags, removing as much air as possible. To reheat, simply thaw in the refrigerator overnight and warm on the stovetop over medium heat, adding a splash of water if it thickens too much.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other meats instead of venison?

Absolutely! Ground beef, turkey, or chicken can be used as substitutes for venison in this chili recipe. Just keep in mind that cooking times may vary slightly, especially if the meat is leaner or fattier. Adjust seasonings as needed to complement the new meat choice.

How can I make this chili vegetarian?

To make a vegetarian version of this venison chili, simply omit the meat and increase the amount of beans and vegetables. You can add lentils or textured vegetable protein (TVP) for added protein and texture. Use vegetable broth instead of water for more flavor and consider adding more spices to enhance the taste.

What should I do if my chili turns out too spicy?

If your chili is too spicy, you can balance the heat by adding a tablespoon of sugar or honey to counteract the spice. Additionally, incorporating sour cream or yogurt as a topping can help mellow the flavors. Adding more beans, tomatoes, or water can also dilute the heat.
