Ingredients

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine raisins, brown sugar, water, shortening, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves in a saucepan.
  2. Heat to boiling and simmer for 2 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  4. Add flour, baking soda, and salt to the raisin mixture and mix well.
  5. Stir in chopped walnuts.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch tube or square pan.
  7. Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 50 to 60 minutes, just until the cake tests done.
