Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups applesauce
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup chopped raisins

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter or margarine; add the egg and applesauce and mix well.
  2. Sift the flour before measuring; set aside.
  3. Sift some of the flour over the chopped nuts and set aside.
  4. Dissolve the baking soda in boiling water.
  5. Add the flour alternately with the water mixture to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with flour.
  6. Stir in the chopped raisins and nuts.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased tube pan.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
