Tips & Substitutions

For added depth of flavor, consider using a mix of ground beef and ground pork. If you prefer a spicier kick, increase the amount of Tabasco sauce or add diced jalapeños. Fresh herbs can be substituted with dried ones; use about a third of the amount. For a vegetarian version, replace the beef with mushrooms and use vegetable broth.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this hearty soup with crusty bread or a side salad for a complete meal. It pairs beautifully with Honey Baked Beans for a comforting dinner. For an extra touch, sprinkle freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top before serving, enhancing its richness and flavor.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, warm in a pot over medium heat, stirring occasionally until heated through. You can also microwave individual portions for 2-3 minutes, checking and stirring halfway for even heating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of meat in this soup?

Absolutely! You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option. If you prefer a more robust flavor, try using ground lamb or even Italian sausage for an added spice profile.

What can I add to make the soup thicker?

To thicken the soup, consider adding a diced potato or a handful of uncooked pasta about halfway through the cooking process. Alternatively, you can mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with cold water and stir it into the soup during the last 10 minutes of cooking.

Is there a way to make this soup ahead of time?

Yes, this soup can be made ahead and actually tastes better the next day as the flavors meld. Simply prepare it as directed, let it cool, and then refrigerate. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave before serving.
