Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups sweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time.
  4. Stir in about three-quarters of the flour mixture, alternating with applesauce, just until blended.
  5. Mix remaining flour mixture, raisins, and walnuts; stir in.
  6. Turn the batter into a well-greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
  7. Bake in preheated 325°F oven until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, about 50 minutes.
  8. Cool on a wire rack before serving.
