Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 (1 lb.) can kidney beans or cooked pinto beans
  • 1 (1 lb.) can tomatoes
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
  • 1/3 Tbsp. oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. basil
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine
  • 1 green pepper, seeded and chopped (optional)
  • Tabasco to taste (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook ground beef with garlic, chopped onion, chopped green pepper (optional), and chili powder until beef is browned and vegetables are tender.
  2. Add kidney or pinto beans, canned tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, and red wine to the beef mixture.
  3. Simmer the chili uncovered for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally, until thickened and flavors meld.
  4. Serve hot, garnished with shredded cheese.
