"Beefy" Beef Stew

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bacon
  • 3 lb. cube beef
  • 4 c. water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. marjoram
  • 1/2 tsp. thyme
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 4 onions
  • 5 medium carrots
  • 3 large potatoes
  • 1/2 c. flour
  • 1/4 c. snipped parsley
  • 1 tsp. browning sauce
  • 1 tsp. browning sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon in a 4-quart pot, stirring occasionally until cooked. Remove from the pot.
  2. Add beef to the pot and brown on all sides.
  3. Add 4 cups of water, salt, thyme, marjoram, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat.
  4. Cover and simmer until beef is tender, about 1 1/2 hours.
  5. Stir in onions, carrots, and potatoes.
  6. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.
  7. Mix 1/2 cup cold water and flour to make a slurry; gradually stir into the stew.
  8. Stir in browning sauce, if using.
  9. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly for 1 minute.
  10. Sprinkle with parsley and cooked bacon before serving.
