- Combine 1 cup flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl.
- Cut in 1/2 cup butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Combine 1 cup cereal with 1 cup boiling water; set aside.
- Cream together 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/3 cup butter.
- Beat in eggs one at a time.
- Mix in buttermilk, applesauce, and softened bran cereal.
- Combine the remaining flour, baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- Add the remaining cereal and egg mixture to the flour mixture; blend well.
- Pour the batter into two greased 9x9-inch baking pans.
- Sprinkle half of the cinnamon mixture on top of each pan.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 30 to 35 minutes.
