- Saute chopped onion in butter until soft.
- Do not overcook.
- Remove from heat and cool.
- Dissolve yeast in a large bowl.
- Add honey, beaten eggs, and salt to the yeast; mix well.
- Add two cups of flour; beat well until the mixture is smooth.
- Add sautéed onion and butter; mix.
- Add grated cheddar cheese; mix in well.
- Stir in 1 1/2 cups flour and 1 cup whole wheat flour.
- Knead on a floured board for five minutes or more.
- Return the kneaded dough to a greased bowl.
- Turn dough over in the bowl to grease all surfaces.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Form the dough into 2 loaves.
- Brush the loaves with beaten egg yolk mixed with 2 tsp. water (glaze).
- Bake until golden brown and cooked through.
