Tips & Substitutions

For tender steak, slice against the grain and marinate for an hour with soy sauce. If you don't have fresh bean sprouts, canned ones work fine; just drain them well. For added flavor, consider using oyster sauce or hoisin sauce to enhance the dish. If you're looking for variety, try adding other vegetables like broccoli or snap peas, similar to Foolproof Beef And Broccoli.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this pepper steak hot over steamed rice or chow mein noodles for a complete meal. It pairs wonderfully with a side of stir-fried vegetables or a crisp salad to balance the flavors. For a more traditional Chinese meal, complement it with egg rolls or dumplings.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm gently on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth to maintain moisture. Avoid reheating in the microwave as it can make the steak tough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different cut of beef for this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute round steak with flank steak or sirloin for a different flavor and texture. Flank steak will give a richer taste, while sirloin is very tender. Just be sure to slice it thinly against the grain for the best results.

What can I use instead of Kikkoman soy sauce?

If you don't have Kikkoman soy sauce, you can use any other brand of soy sauce, or opt for tamari for a gluten-free option. Coconut aminos can also be a good alternative for a soy-free choice, although it will slightly alter the flavor profile.

How do I ensure the steak is tender in this recipe?

To ensure tender steak, be sure to slice it thinly against the grain. Additionally, browning it in hot oil before placing it in the crock-pot helps lock in moisture. Cooking it on low for several hours allows the meat to become tender and flavorful.
