Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa
  • 1 well beaten egg
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 c. chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Mix together chopped dates, hot water, and baking soda; let cool.
  2. Cream sugar, shortening, salt, and vanilla until smooth, then add the cooled date mixture.
  3. Combine dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, cocoa; gradually mix into the wet mixture.
  4. Add the well-beaten egg and mix well.
  5. Pour batter into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  6. Top with chocolate chips and chopped nuts.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes.
