Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 14 oz. small chocolate covered peppermint patties

Instructions

  1. Combine all-purpose flour, sugar, cocoa, and ground cinnamon in a bowl and set aside.
  2. Combine butter and water in a large saucepan; bring to a boil.
  3. Remove from heat; stir in baking soda.
  4. Add the flour mixture, stirring well to combine.
  5. Stir in eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.
  6. Spoon the batter into a greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
  8. Top the cake with unwrapped peppermint patties and bake for an additional 2 minutes.
  9. Gently spread melted candy over the cake surface.
  10. Spread chocolate frosting evenly over the top of the cake.
