  • 1 Tbsp. nutmeg
  • 5 lb. flour
  • 1 pt. Green Label Brer Rabbit molasses
  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. cloves
  • 1 Tbsp. ginger
  • 3 Tbsp. baking soda

Instructions

  2. Add sugar, eggs, softened oleo or butter, and the baking soda dissolved in boiling water.
  3. Stir in ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and salt.

  5. Mix thoroughly until stiff with flour.
  6. Roll into walnut-sized balls and flatten on a greased cookie sheet with a floured glass bottom.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using blackstrap molasses instead of Gold Label Brer Rabbit molasses. If you want to reduce sugar, you can substitute half of the sugar with unsweetened applesauce. To make the cookies more festive, add chocolate chips or dried cranberries. Remember to coat the raisins and nuts in flour to prevent them from sinking to the bottom during baking.

Serving Suggestions

These cookies are perfect for holiday gatherings or as a snack with a warm beverage. Pair them with a glass of milk or a cup of tea for a delightful treat. They also complement well with desserts like Baked Rum Peaches, adding a sweet and spiced layer to your dessert table.

Storage & Reheating

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag. To enjoy them later, simply thaw at room temperature or warm them briefly in the microwave for a soft texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of dried fruit instead of raisins and currants?

Absolutely! Feel free to substitute with your favorite dried fruits, such as dried apricots or cherries. Just make sure to chop them into small pieces to maintain the cookie's texture and ensure an even distribution throughout the dough.

How can I make these cookies softer?

If you prefer chewy cookies, try chilling the dough before baking. This allows the flavors to meld and helps create a nice chewy consistency.

Can I make these cookies vegan?

Yes! You can replace the eggs with flaxseed meal mixed with water or use a commercial egg replacer. For the butter, use a vegan butter alternative or coconut oil. Make sure to check the molasses and syrup brands for any non-vegan ingredients.
