Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup nuts

Instructions

  1. Soak chopped dates, boiling water, and soda together and let cool.
  2. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs until smooth.
  3. Add the cooled date mixture to the creamed mixture.
  4. Sift together flour, cocoa, and salt, then add to the wet ingredients.
  5. Stir in vanilla, chocolate chips, and nuts.
  6. Pour batter into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan and bake at 350°F for 40 minutes.
