Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup brown rice
  • 1/2 cup pearl barley
  • 1 1/2 to 2 pounds hamburger
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup mushroom soup
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 1 can mushrooms with juice
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground meat in a skillet and drain off excess fat.
  2. Add chopped celery and onions to the meat and cook until vegetables are tender.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine cooked meat and vegetables with mushroom soup, water, chopped mushrooms with juice, soy sauce, brown rice, and pearl barley.
  4. Mix well and transfer to a baking dish.
  5. Bake uncovered at 350°F (175°C) for 1.5 to 2 hours until hot and bubbly.
  6. Taste and add salt if needed, considering soy sauce is salty.
  7. Add more water if the mixture becomes too dry during baking.
