  2. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar until well combined.
  4. Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating after each addition.
  5. Blend in vanilla extract and the melted chocolate.
  6. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk, beating after each addition.
  7. Fold in the beaten egg whites.
  8. Pour the batter into three greased and floured 9-inch layer pans.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes.
  10. Cool in pans for 15 minutes.
  11. Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack.
