Ingredients

  • 1 lb beef, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 small bay leaf
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • pinch of allspice
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 6 carrots, quartered
  • 8 small onions
  • 3 potatoes, peeled and cut in eighths

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef in 1 to 2 tablespoons of fat in a large pot.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients, except the vegetables.
  3. Simmer for 1 hour and 45 minutes, adding water if necessary.
  4. Add the carrots, onions, and potatoes.
  5. Cook for an additional 30 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
  6. Thicken the liquid if desired to make gravy.
