Tips & Substitutions

For added flavor, consider using a mix of ground meats, such as pork or turkey, in place of all ground beef. You can also substitute the tomato soup with crushed tomatoes for a fresher taste. If you prefer a thicker stew, increase the amount of bread crumbs or flour in the gravy. Don't hesitate to add herbs like thyme or parsley to enhance the dish's flavor profile.

Serving Suggestions

This hearty stew can be served with crusty bread or over a bed of fluffy rice to soak up the delicious sauce. Pair it with a simple green salad for a balanced meal. For a comforting twist, serve alongside a bowl of Granny'S Hot Dish, which offers a similar homey feel. A sprinkle of shredded cheese on top just before serving can also elevate the dish.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover Hamburger Skillet Stew can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply warm it on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally until heated through. For longer storage, consider freezing the stew for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this stew in advance?

Absolutely! The flavors of Hamburger Skillet Stew improve when made a day ahead, making it a perfect candidate for meal prep. Simply prepare the stew, let it cool, and store it in the refrigerator. Reheat it gently on the stove before serving, and consider adding a splash of water if it thickens too much.

What can I use instead of green beans?

If you don't have green beans on hand, you can substitute them with other vegetables like peas, corn, or even diced bell peppers. This recipe is flexible, allowing you to incorporate whatever vegetables you prefer or have available, making it a great option for using up leftovers.

Is there a way to make this dish less fatty?

To reduce the fat content, opt for lean ground beef or substitute with ground turkey or chicken. You can also drain any excess grease after browning the meatballs. Additionally, using low-sodium tomato soup and reducing the amount of shortening will help make the stew a healthier choice while still maintaining its rich flavor.
