Ingredients

  • 1 cup sorghum (molasses)
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 cups sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3 heaping teaspoons ginger
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 4 cups applesauce

Instructions

  1. Cream sorghum, butter, and sugar until well blended.
  2. Mix well-beaten eggs with milk.
  3. Sift dry ingredients together.
  4. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with egg-milk mixture, stirring until smooth.
  5. Divide batter into 6 equal portions of 1 cup each.
  6. Spread batter in well-greased 9-inch cake pans to make 6 layers.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes.
  8. Remove layers from pans and stack with applesauce between each layer.
  9. Sweeten and/or spice applesauce to taste before spreading.
