Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pound chopped dates
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup nuts
  • 1 cup crushed pineapple with juice
  • 1 cup chopped candied fruit

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar, shortening, and eggs until light and fluffy.
  2. Sift together flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, and baking soda.
  3. Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients to the egg mixture, mixing well.
  4. Add the rest of the ingredients: chopped dates, raisins, nuts, crushed pineapple with juice, and candied fruit.
  5. Add 1/4 cup of milk if the mixture is too stiff.
  6. Coat the chopped fruits with a small amount of flour before adding to prevent sinking.
  7. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
  8. Bake at 375°F (190°C) until light brown, about 10 minutes.
