Tips & Substitutions

For a spicier kick, add more jalapeno or chili powder according to your taste preferences. You can substitute the hot Italian sausage with mild sausage for a less spicy version. If you prefer a vegetarian option, try using plant-based sausage and adding more beans. This chili also benefits from a long, slow cooking time, which allows flavors to meld beautifully.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this chili hot, garnished with shredded cheese, sour cream, or chopped green onions for added flavor. It pairs beautifully with cornbread or tortilla chips for a satisfying meal. For a complete dinner, serve alongside a fresh salad or a side of Mini Bagel Treats for something a bit different.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover chili in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, simply warm it on the stove over medium heat until heated through, or microwave in individual portions. You can also freeze chili for up to 3 months; just make sure to cool it completely before transferring it to freezer-safe containers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of beans in this chili?

Absolutely! While pinto and kidney beans are traditional, you can substitute with black beans, cannellini beans, or even chickpeas for a unique twist. Just ensure that any beans you use are drained and rinsed if canned, to keep the chili from becoming too salty.

What can I do if my chili turns out too spicy?

Lastly, serving the chili with bread or rice can help tone down the spice level.

How can I make this chili ahead of time?

This chili is perfect for making ahead of time! Prepare it the day before and let the flavors develop overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat gently before serving. It’s also a great dish to make in a slow cooker, allowing you to set it and forget it while you enjoy your day.
