Ingredients

  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 c. butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 c. self-rising flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. quick cooking oats
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 c. chopped candy orange slices, rolled in granulated sugar
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 1/2 c. chopped dates, rolled in sugar
  • 1 1/4 c. butter
  • 2 1/2 c. sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter, gradually add sugar, and beat until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in eggs, one at a time, creaming well after each addition.
  3. Sift together self-rising flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  4. Add the dry ingredients alternately with milk and vanilla to the creamed mixture.
  5. Remove 2 cups of batter and blend the cocoa into it.
  6. Alternately spoon the light and chocolate batters into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan or a 10-inch cast-aluminum Bundt pan.
  7. Bake in a slow oven (325°F) for 70 minutes if using a tube pan, or 90 minutes if using a Bundt pan, until the cake tests done.
  8. Cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
  9. Invert the cake onto a wire rack and remove the pan.
  10. Cool the cake thoroughly.
  11. Sift confectioners sugar on top before serving.
