Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Beat shortening and brown sugar until creamy.
  2. Beat in eggs and molasses.
  3. Mix dry ingredients and stir in raisins and nuts, if used.
  4. Stir flour mixture into molasses mixture.
  5. Drop dough from a teaspoon onto a lightly greased baking sheet, spacing cookies about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to 12 minutes or until set but not hard.
  7. Remove from baking sheet while warm.
