Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 7 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup ground walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar well.
  2. Add egg yolks and beat well for about 5 minutes.
  3. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder together and add in three parts to the creamed mixture, blending well.
  4. Add vanilla extract.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff but not dry.
  6. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the batter with a spatula or rubber scraper.
  7. Grease a 9 x 13-inch pan and dust with flour.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread to the edges.
  9. Sprinkle ground walnuts evenly over the batter.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes.
  11. While warm, lightly dust with powdered sugar.
  12. Cool the cake and cut with a serrated round cookie cutter to form half-moon shaped cakes.
