  • 1 (10 oz.) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 small can chopped mushrooms

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using homemade bacon drippings instead of store-bought. If you don't have shrimp, diced chicken or firm tofu can be a good substitution, adjusting the cooking time as needed. Adding a pinch of cayenne pepper can give it a slight kick. If you prefer a thicker sauce, increase the flour to 2 teaspoons and whisk it into the water before adding it to the pan.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this dish over a bed of rice or alongside crusty bread to soak up the sauce. A fresh salad, like a Strawberry Spinach Salad With Strawberry-Poppy Seed Dressing, pairs beautifully, adding a refreshing contrast. For a complete meal, consider serving it with Mildred'S Cowboy Beans for a hearty side.

Storage & Reheating

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm the shrimp mixture on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth to prevent drying out. Avoid microwaving for best texture and flavor retention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen shrimp for this recipe?

Yes, you can use frozen shrimp, but make sure to thaw them completely before cooking. This ensures even cooking and prevents excess water from affecting the sauce. Simply place the frozen shrimp in the refrigerator overnight or run them under cold water until thawed.

Is there a substitute for cream of mushroom soup?

If you prefer not to use canned soup, you can make a quick homemade version. Sauté mushrooms with butter, then add flour and broth until thickened. This gives you a fresher taste and allows you to control the ingredients. You can also use cream of chicken soup as an alternative.

What type of shrimp is best for this recipe?

Small, peeled, raw shrimp are ideal for this dish due to their quick cooking time and ability to absorb flavors. However, you can use medium or large shrimp as well; just adjust the cooking time accordingly to ensure they are cooked through while remaining tender.
