Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 3/4 cup white flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar or honey
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon orange peel
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup margarine

Instructions

  1. Melt the margarine and shortening in preparation for mixing with the dry ingredients.
  2. Alternately mix the dry and wet ingredients until fully combined.
  3. Keep stirring until no dry ingredients remain; the batter will be very stiff.
  4. Drop small spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet at least 2 inches apart.
  5. Bake at 375°F for up to 15 minutes or until golden.
  6. Small drops are recommended because they are dense.
