Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups raisins
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 10 to 12 cups flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 c. warm water
  • 10 to 12 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Combine raisins and 2 cups of water in a bowl and let set on the counter, covered with a plastic bag, overnight.
  2. In the morning, drain the raisins and set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, melted butter, beaten eggs, vanilla, salt, and warm water.
  4. Stir in 2 3/4 cups of flour and soda until well blended.
  5. Add the drained raisins and enough remaining flour (up to 10-12 cups) to make a stiff dough.
  6. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  8. Punch down the dough and shape into loaves.
  9. Place in greased loaf pans and let rise until nearly doubled, about 1 hour.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from oven, cool slightly, and serve.
