Ingredients

  • 6 cups finely shredded cabbage
  • 2 cups boiling salted water
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons grated onion
  • 2 cups diced precooked ham
  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs, toasted

Instructions

  1. Cook cabbage, covered, in boiling salted water for about 10 minutes. Drain well.
  2. Melt butter or margarine in a saucepan; blend in flour, dry mustard, salt, and pepper.
  3. Gradually stir in milk and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and boils.
  4. Add grated cheese and grated onion; cook until cheese melts.
  5. Place drained cabbage in a 1 1/2-quart baking dish.
  6. Add diced ham and pour the sauce over all.
  7. Mix well with a fork and top with toasted bread crumbs.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes or until bubbly and brown.
