Severed Hand Pies

Ingredients

  • Filling
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 yellow onion, cut into thin slices
  • 1 lb hamburger
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • salt and pepper
  • Pastry Assembly
  • 2 (14 1/8 ounce) packages pie crusts
  • flour, for surface
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a saute pan. Cook onions until slightly translucent (about 4 minutes). Add ground beef and brown. Drain out grease.
  2. Add the rest of the filling ingredients and simmer 15-20 minutes with lid.
  3. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  4. Trace your hand to create a hand stencil out of cardboard.
  5. Roll out the pie crust onto a floured surface.
  6. Use a paring knife to cut 2 hands in each sheet of pie crust, making a total of 8 hands (4 for base, 4 for top).
  7. Brush edges of the base hands with egg wash. Add 2 tablespoons of filling to the center of each and 2 tablespoons shredded cheese. Cover each with second dough hand and press around the edges. Crimp edges with fork and brush with egg.
  8. Bake for 14 minutes. Serve warm.
