Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 cups applesauce
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 4 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 pound raisins
  • 1 pound orange gum candy, cut up

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, then stir in applesauce.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
  5. Stir in chopped nuts, raisins, and cut-up orange gum candy.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased tube pan.
  7. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for approximately 1 1/2 hours, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
