Ingredients
- 1/2 cup shortening ⓘ
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed ⓘ
- 1 teaspoon salt ⓘ
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves ⓘ
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon ⓘ
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg ⓘ
- 2 eggs ⓘ
- 1 cup flour ⓘ
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda ⓘ
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup chopped dates ⓘ
- 1 cup raisins ⓘ
- 3/4 cup mixed candied fruits, cut fine ⓘ
- 1 cup chopped walnuts ⓘ
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, cream together shortening and brown sugar until smooth.
- Add salt, ground cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg; mix well.
- Beat in eggs one at a time.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and baking soda.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
- Stir in chopped dates, raisins, candied fruits, and chopped walnuts.
- Drop spoonfuls of dough onto an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown around the edges.
- Allow cookies to cool on wire racks before serving.
