Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 3/4 cup mixed candied fruits, cut fine
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together shortening and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Add salt, ground cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg; mix well.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and baking soda.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  7. Stir in chopped dates, raisins, candied fruits, and chopped walnuts.
  8. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto an ungreased baking sheet.
  9. Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown around the edges.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on wire racks before serving.
