Ingredients

  • 1 lb. sweet or hot Italian sausage
  • 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
  • 1 (15 oz.) container cottage cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seed
  • 1/4 cup dried parsley
  • 4 cups canned tomatoes
  • 2 (6 oz.) cans tomato paste
  • 12 curly lasagna noodles
  • 1 egg
  • 12 curly lasagna noodles
  • 1 egg (hard-boiled)

Instructions

  1. Peel sausage and cut into large pieces, then brown in a large saucepan.
  2. Add ground beef, onion, and garlic; cook until well browned.
  3. Stir in sugar, salt, basil, fennel seed, pepper, and half of the parsley.
  4. Add canned tomatoes, tomato paste, and 1/2 cup water; bring to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  6. Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions; drain.
  7. Mix cottage cheese with 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper, and remaining parsley.
  8. Hard-boil the egg, peel, and chop.
  9. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Spread a layer of meat sauce over a prepared pastry sheet, layer noodles, then cheese mixture.
  11. Add chopped hard-boiled egg on top, then roll up into a strudel shape.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  13. Let stand for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
