Ingredients

  • 2 lb boneless round steak
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 medium onion sliced
  • 1 carrot diced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) tomatoes with liquid, cut up
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • cooked potatoes or noodles

Instructions

  1. Trim excess fat from the steak and cut into serving-sized pieces.
  2. Combine flour, dry mustard, salt, and pepper; pound the steak pieces to tenderize.
  3. In a skillet, brown the steak in oil, cooking half at a time.
  4. Place the browned meat in a large baking dish and top with sliced onion.
  5. Mix together the tomatoes, diced carrot, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce; pour over the meat.
  6. Cover the dish and bake at 325°F (163°C) for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until the meat is tender.
  7. Remove the meat to a serving platter.
  8. Optional: simmer the tomato-onion mixture until reduced to a thick gravy before serving.
