Ingredients

  • 2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 c. flour
  • 2 tsp soda
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 tsp allspice
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 2 c. applesauce
  • 1 c. dates
  • 1 c. brazil nuts
  • 1 c. small gum drops
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the soda in the applesauce.
  2. Mix all ingredients in the order listed in the recipe.
  3. Add dates and brazil nuts as near whole as possible.
  4. Line loaf pans with wax paper.
  5. Pour the batter into the bottom of each pan and drop the gumdrops on top, ensuring they do not touch the pan.
  6. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (about 45 minutes).
