Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider browning the hamburger before adding it to the kettle. You can substitute the soup meat with bone for beef shanks or stew meat if desired. If you want to add more veggies, try incorporating peas or corn for added sweetness and texture. Adjust the seasonings according to your taste; a dash of Worcestershire sauce can enhance the umami flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use ground turkey instead of hamburger?

Yes, ground turkey is a great alternative to hamburger and will lighten the dish. Just be sure to adjust the cooking time, as turkey may cook faster. The flavor will be slightly different, so you might want to add a bit more seasoning to enhance the taste.

How can I make this stew spicier?

To add spice, consider including diced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce when adding the vegetables. You can also sprinkle in some red pepper flakes or use a spicier variety of tomato soup to elevate the heat level to your preference.

Is it possible to make this stew in a slow cooker?

Absolutely! To make this stew in a slow cooker, brown the hamburger and soup meat first, then transfer everything to the slow cooker. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours. Add the barley during the last hour of cooking for the best texture.
