Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon rind
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/2 cup chopped red and green candied cherries

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water; let stand for 5 minutes.
  2. Combine warm milk, sugar, salt, and lemon rind in a bowl; mix well.
  3. Cut butter into flour with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  4. Add yeast mixture and beaten egg to the milk mixture; mix well.
  5. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough.
  7. Add raisins, chopped cherries, and chopped almonds to the dough.
  8. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  9. Divide the dough into 3 equal portions.
  10. Roll each portion into a 20-inch-long rope.
  11. Place the ropes side by side on a greased baking sheet and braid them.
  12. Tuck the ends under to seal the braid.
  13. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  14. Brush the top of the bread with 1 beaten egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon water.
  15. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes until golden brown.
  16. Cool the bread and then drizzle with glaze before serving.
