Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 5 large cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper
  • 1/4 lb. ground beef
  • 1/4 lb. pork sausage
  • 3 Tbsp. Contadina tomato paste
  • 1 (28 oz.) can Contadina whole tomatoes, chopped with juice
  • 1 (8 oz.) can Contadina tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. crushed thyme
  • 2 tsp. crushed basil
  • 3/4 tsp. crushed oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 (15 oz.) carton part-skim Ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1 tsp. dried parsley
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 2/3 c. grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 1/3 c. grated Mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meat sauce: heat olive oil in a 3-quart saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and sauté for about 3 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and crushed red pepper; sauté for 1 minute.
  4. Add ground beef and sausage; brown the meat and drain off excess fat.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, sugar, salt, black pepper, thyme, basil, and oregano.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer uncovered for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
