Ingredients

  • 1 lb. pork steak
  • 2 Tbsp. hot shortening
  • 1/2 c. sliced onion
  • 1/2 c. green pepper strips
  • 4 oz. can mushroom stems and pieces
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/2 c. Pet evaporated milk
  • 8 oz. tomato sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 c. cooked rice

Instructions

  1. Cut the pork steak into 2 x 1/2-inch strips and brown in hot shortening in a skillet.
  2. Add sliced onion, green pepper strips, and drained mushroom stems and pieces. Cook until tender.
  3. Remove from heat and move the meat mixture to one side of the skillet.
  4. Stir flour into the drippings in the skillet.
  5. Gradually stir in 1/3 cup of the liquid drained from mushrooms and the evaporated milk.
  6. Cook over low heat until the mixture thickens.
  7. Add the tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, salt, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well.
  8. Cover and cook over low heat for 30 minutes.
  9. Serve the sauce over cooked rice.
