Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp margarine
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp chopped parsley
  • 2 to 3 cups finely shredded cabbage
  • 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 large or 2 medium carrots, sliced thinly
  • 2 stalks celery, cut in 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup cubed Canadian bacon or smoky ham
  • 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups milk
  • dash paprika

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, melt the margarine.
  2. Stir in flour, salt, and dashes of paprika and white pepper.
  3. Slowly add milk while stirring to avoid lumps.
  4. Cook until fairly thick, stirring constantly.
  5. Layer shredded cabbage, sliced potatoes, sliced onion, sliced carrots, celery pieces, and cubed Canadian bacon or ham in a baking dish.
  6. Pour the prepared white sauce over the layered ingredients.
  7. Sprinkle grated Cheddar cheese on top.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 40 minutes until bubbly and golden.
