Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 medium bell pepper
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. basil
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 3 cans chicken broth
  • 3 cans water
  • 1 bag frozen okra, cut
  • 1 tsp. gumbo file
  • 1 stalk celery, cut
  • 1 tsp. thyme
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)
  • 1 cup tomatoes
  • 1 lb. hot smoked sausage
  • 3 cups shrimp

Instructions

  1. Saute onion, celery, bell pepper, sausage, thyme, oregano, cayenne pepper, and basil.
  2. Add chicken broth and water to the sauteed mixture.
  3. Cook the mixture, then add tomatoes, okra, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Continue cooking until flavors meld.
  5. Add shrimp and cook until just pink.
  6. Add file powder before serving.
