  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1/2 c. onion, chopped
  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 2 Tbsp. light brown sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 to 10 drops Tabasco sauce
  • 1/4 c. ketchup
  • 1/2 to 1 c. tomato juice or V-8 juice
  • 8 slices white bread
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 2 to 4 Tbsp. butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. Saute garlic in vegetable oil over medium heat in a large skillet.
  2. As the garlic begins to brown, add the chopped onion and saute until soft.
  3. Stir in the ground beef, breaking it apart with a fork, and cook until browned.
  4. Add brown sugar, salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, ketchup, and tomato juice or V-8 juice to the meat mixture.
  5. Simmer the meat sauce until thickened, about 10 minutes.
  6. While the sauce simmers, toast the bread slices until golden brown.
  7. Spread butter or margarine on the toasted bread slices.
  8. Assemble sandwiches by placing a slice of American cheese on four slices of bread, top with the meat mixture, then cover with the remaining bread slices.

Tips & Substitutions

For a spicier kick, increase the Tabasco sauce or try adding diced jalapeños to the beef mixture. If you're out of Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce can be a suitable substitute. For a healthier option, consider using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef. Pair this dish with a simple salad or some steamed vegetables to balance the richness.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the toasted Sloppy Joes with a side of crispy potato chips or coleslaw for a classic touch. For a comforting meal, pair it with a bowl of Easy Vegetable Soup or a refreshing side salad. These sandwiches are perfect for game day or casual gatherings, making them a great choice for feeding a crowd.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm the meat mixture in a skillet over medium heat until heated through. You can also microwave individual sandwiches for about 30-45 seconds, but to maintain the toastiness of the bread, it's best to use a skillet.
