Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. butter
  • 1/2 lb. lard
  • 2 lb. granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 box currants
  • 1 box seedless raisins
  • 1 package candied citron
  • 1 package candied pineapple
  • 2 packages candied lemon peel
  • 2 packages candied orange peel
  • 2 packages candied cherries
  • 1 lb. walnuts
  • 6 cups coffee
  • 14 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Line 8 bread pans with wax paper.
  2. Cream butter, lard, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, molasses, and beaten eggs; mix thoroughly.
  4. Fold in currants and seedless raisins.
  5. Add chopped candied citron, candied pineapple, candied lemon peel, candied orange peel, and candied cherries.
  6. Chop walnuts and add to the mixture.
  7. Add salt and baking soda, mixing well.
  8. Alternate adding coffee and flour, using only enough coffee to keep the mixture moist.
  9. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  10. Bake in a 250°F (120°C) oven for 2 hours or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out dry.
