Ingredients

  • 1 c. raisins
  • 1 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 c. moist brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. soft butter or margarine
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. dark molasses
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Grease baking sheets.
  2. Start oven 10 minutes before baking, set to moderately hot at 400°F.
  3. Wash raisins and plump them, then cool.
  4. Chop nuts.
  5. Sift flour, measure and resift 4 times with the baking soda, salt, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon.
  6. Press brown sugar through a coarse sieve to remove lumps.
  7. In a 3-quart mixing bowl, cream butter and shortening with a wooden spoon until smooth.
  8. Add sugar and cream well.
  9. Scrape the spoon and remove.
  10. Beat in egg with rotary beater until fluffy.
  11. Beat in molasses until satiny.
  12. Remove beater and use a spoon.
  13. Stir in flour mixture and buttermilk alternately in 2 or 3 portions, beginning and ending with flour, mixing until smooth after each portion.
  14. Stir in raisins and nuts until well distributed.
  15. Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto prepared sheet.
  16. Bake about 10 minutes or until delicately browned.
  17. Remove immediately from sheet to a cake rack.
  18. When cool, store in a box or jar with a tight-fitting lid, with a sheet of wax paper between each layer.
