Ingredients

  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 pound raisins
  • 1/2 pound currants
  • 3/4 cup candied mixed fruit
  • 2 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 pound margarine
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 heaping teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Cream the sugar and margarine together.
  2. Add the eggs to the creamed mixture and beat well.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, baking powder, and baking soda.
  4. Stir in the raisins, currants, and candied mixed fruit.
  5. Alternately add the buttermilk and the flour mixture to the creamed mixture, mixing until just combined, making the batter moist like fruit cake.
  6. Pour the batter into two greased loaf pans lined with waxed paper.
  7. Bake in a 350°F oven for 30 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 300°F and bake for an additional 30 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and cool on a rack.
  9. Wrap the bread in foil and store in the refrigerator.
