Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of coconut milk or a few drops of sesame oil. You can substitute shrimp with chicken or tofu for different protein options. If you prefer a thicker soup, blend a portion of the rice and return it to the pot. Pair this dish with a side of Oriental Luncheon Salad for a refreshing contrast.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the rice soup hot, garnished with additional chopped green onions and a sprinkle of Chinese parsley for color. This dish is delightful on its own or can be paired with Seafood Egg Rolls for a satisfying meal. A squeeze of lime can add a zesty finish to the soup.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. When reheating, add a splash of water to loosen the soup and heat gently on the stove or in the microwave, stirring occasionally to maintain the texture of the rice and shrimp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this rice soup ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the soup base in advance, but it's best to add the shrimp just before serving to keep them tender. If making ahead, store the soup without the shrimp, and add them when ready to eat.

What can I use instead of fish sauce?

If you want a fish sauce substitute, try using soy sauce combined with a bit of lime juice or vinegar for a similar umami flavor. You can also use a vegan fish sauce if you prefer a plant-based option.

How spicy is this rice soup?

This rice soup is not inherently spicy; however, you can add sliced fresh chili peppers or a dash of hot sauce if you enjoy heat. Adjust the spice level according to your preference for a personalized touch.
