Ingredients

  • 3 c. walnuts
  • 1 c. currants
  • 2 c. coarsely chopped mixed candied fruits and peels
  • 1 1/2 c. snipped prunes
  • 1 1/2 c. seedless raisins
  • 1 c. candied cherries
  • 1/2 c. bourbon or orange juice
  • 1 c. butter or margarine
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. cake flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar

Instructions

  1. Sift the walnuts, currants, and mixed candied fruits and peels; set aside.
  2. Cream shortening and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla and food coloring; mix well.
  4. Gradually add sifted dry ingredients with buttermilk, mixing until just combined.
  5. Fold in the sifted dry ingredients last; do not beat into batter.
  6. Pour batter into two greased and floured 9-inch pans or a Bundt pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool completely, then frost with white or red confectioners icing or drizzle glaze.
