Ingredients

  • 3 lb. round steak
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 beef bouillon cubes
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 6 oz. can tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 4 onions
  • 2 cups green pepper
  • 3/4 lb. fresh mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the steak in hot oil in a large skillet or pot.
  2. Add water, beef bouillon cubes, vinegar, tomato paste, brown sugar, pepper, allspice, cloves, cinnamon stick, garlic, onions, green pepper, and mushrooms.
  3. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes.
  4. Add mushrooms and cook for an additional 35 minutes.
  5. Remove the cinnamon sticks.
  6. In a jar, combine flour and 3/4 cup water, then shake until smooth.
  7. Stir the flour mixture into the stew and cook until thickened.
  8. Pour the stew into a 4-quart casserole dish.
  9. Stir Parmesan cheese into hot mashed potatoes and spoon around the casserole.
  10. Sprinkle with paprika.
  11. Bake at 375°F for 50 minutes.
