Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 medium green pepper, chopped
  • cooking oil
  • 1 cup macaroni
  • 1 (8 oz.) can kidney beans
  • 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup Gold Medal flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 lb. beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 6 cups hot water
  • 3 medium potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 medium turnip, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 carrots, cut into 1-inch slices

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper.
  2. Coat the beef stew meat with the flour mixture.
  3. Melt shortening in a large skillet over medium heat; brown the coated meat thoroughly.
  4. Add 6 cups of hot water; heat to boiling.
  5. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 2 hours.
  6. Stir in the chopped onion, chopped green pepper, kidney beans, tomato sauce, macaroni, chili powder, salt, and water.
  7. Simmer for an additional 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
  8. Serve hot topped with shredded Cheddar cheese.
