Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (8 oz.) can sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 egg white, beaten
  • 1 caraway seed (optional)
  • 6 oz. thinly sliced corned beef
  • 1/4 pound sliced Swiss cheese
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1 cup hot water (125 to 130 degrees F)
  • 1 tablespoon margarine
  • 1/4 cup Thousand Island dressing
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • dried minced onion (little bit)
  • dash Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, sugar, salt, yeast, and hot water to form a dough and knead well.
  2. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  3. Preheat oven and shape the dough into a loaf or rolls.
  4. Bake until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Meanwhile, drain the sauerkraut and prepare the filling.
  6. Spread Thousand Island dressing on bread slices or buns.
  7. Layer sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese, and drained sauerkraut.
  8. Optional: sprinkle caraway seeds and dried minced onion over the filling.
  9. Top with another bread slice or close the sandwich.
  10. Heat the sandwich in a skillet or oven to melt the cheese and warm through.
  11. Serve with warmed extra Thousand Island dressing and a dash of Worcestershire sauce for added flavor.
